WCR Sneak Preview

Issue of October 19, 2009

This week’s WCR includes updates on the situation of Bishop Raymond Lahey, charged with possession of child pornography. The pope’s man in Canada, Archbishop Luigi Ventura, is calling Catholics to “prayer, silence and hope” that the Church can overcome its sins.

The WCR also includes a full report on the Synod of Bishops for Africa and the canonizations of St. Jeanne Jugan, St. Damien de Veuster and three others.

Locally, our reporters bring you news about Catholics reaching out to help parishioners of the United Church in Wetaskiwin, which was destroyed by fire. John Wetherill, long-time organist at St. Joseph’s Basilica, died this week and is recalled in a story that interviewed some who worked with him.

There are also reports on the first annual meeting of Covenant Health, the MacNeil Society made up of people who have bequested money to the Foundation of St. Joseph Seminary and Newman Theological College, as well as the 25th anniversary of Sr. Roma De Robertis, a former WCR reporter who joined a religious order.

There’s lots of interest to read in this week’s WCR.
